The DisEnchantments asks difficult but necessary questions: How do we protect fragile ecosystems while preserving opportunities for people to experience them? What happens when the agencies responsible for protecting Wilderness no longer have the resources to fulfill their mandates? And what can we learn from other Wilderness areas confronting similar challenges?

By exploring these questions through the unfolding crisis in the Enchantments, the film aims to deepen public understanding of Wilderness designation, encourage responsible recreation, and inspire a national conversation about the future of America's wild places.

Ultimately, The DisEnchantments seeks to move audiences from awareness to action, encouraging people to engage in the conversation, share their perspectives, and participate in efforts to protect these extraordinary landscapes for generations to come.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WILDERNESS GOES VIRAL?

High in Washington's Cascade Mountains, the Alpine Lakes Wilderness is home to some of America's most spectacular alpine landscapes. But its extraordinary beauty and growing popularity have brought new challenges, raising difficult questions about how we protect these wild places while ensuring they remain accessible to all.

In the Enchantments, increasing visitation is placing unprecedented pressure on fragile alpine ecosystems. At the same time, federal staffing cuts have left just one wilderness ranger responsible for nearly half a million acres. Local organizations and volunteers are stepping up, but the challenges are growing faster than the resources available to address them.

Complicating the issue is a changing outdoor recreation landscape. Social media has introduced a new generation of visitors to Wilderness, including communities historically underrepresented in these spaces. While greater access brings opportunities for connection and appreciation, it also raises fundamental questions about how we balance conservation with equitable access.

Set against sweeping mountain landscapes, The DisEnchantments explores the growing challenges facing one of America's most treasured wild places and the people working to protect it. Through the perspectives of Wilderness advocates, land managers, scientists, recreationists, and a new generation of outdoor voices, the film examines the competing values at the heart of the Wilderness Act of 1964.

Who is Wilderness for, and can it survive the 21st century?
